ACTIVE PHOTOBARRIER COMPLEX™
Researchers at Johnson & Johnson Consumer Group of Companies have discovered and developed a patented, breakthrough technology in sun protection that provides highly effective, broad spectrum and photostable UVA/UVB protection. Incorporated into the AVEENO® CONTINUOUS PROTECTION® sun care line and in AVEENO® POSITIVELY RADIANT® SPF 30 Daily Moisturizer and AVEENO® POSITIVELY AGELESS™ Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30 as ACTIVE PHOTOBARRIER COMPLEX™, this technology provides among the highest levels of UVA protection available in the US.
Avobenzone is widely recognized as one of the broadest and most effective UVA filters available, however it can break down under UV radiation causing it to lose its ability to further absorb UV radiation. ACTIVE PHOTOBARRIER COMPLEX™ combines avobenzone and oxybenzone, both FDA approved sunscreens, with a photostabilizer, DEHN, to provide highly effective and photostable UVA/UVB protection. Avobenzone is a long range UVA filter and oxybenzone is both a UVB and short range UVA filter. The patented technology works by transferring the absorbed energy from avobenzone to DEHN and oxybenzone, allowing avobenzone to provide continued high levels of UVA protection.

Sun care products containing ACTIVE PHOTOBARRIER COMPLEX™ have been scientifically shown to maintain broad spectrum UV protection over time. The above example illustrates laboratory test results simulating up to 5 hours of sun exposure on an AVEENO® formulation with ACTIVE PHOTOBARRIER COMPLEX™. The graph is an indication of the sunscreen formulation’s ability to maintain its high level of UV-absorbance over time.
ACTIVE PHOTOBARRIER COMPLEX™ technology in AVEENO® products has also been tested in vivo to measure the Protection Factor in the UVA region (UV-PFA). This testing also confirms the high levels of UVA protection for these products.
AVEENO® products containing ACTIVE PHOTOBARRIER COMPLEX™ have been developed so that consumers using these products not only are using aesthetically pleasing products, but they are also protecting themselves with highly effective, broad spectrum and photostable UVA/UVB protection.
